In 1960s Liverpool twin boys are born to a loving mother who has the heart but not the wealth to care for two babies. Offered a way out by her wealthy, childless boss, Mrs Johnstone agrees to give up one of her boys in exchange for money and a better life for at least one of her sons. Shevows to never tell anyone of their agreement. Inevitably the two boys - Mickey and Eddie — meet in later life and their relationship as friends blossoms much to the despair of their mothers.
