Synopsis
Les Miserables' story begins when Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. He is determined to put his criminal past behind him but his attempts to pull himself out of the gutter are constantly threatened by his conscience. When another man is arrested in his place and threatened by the pursuit of the policeman, Javert, Valjean must decide who will be punished. Victor Hugo once said: "You are right, Sir, when you say that Les Misérables is written for a universal audience. I don't know whether it will be read by everyone, but it is meant for everyone."
