Synopsis
A thought-provoking drama about the lives of members of the Ashington Group, The Pitmen Painters is by Billy Elliot writer, Lee Hall. The story follows a group of Newcastle miners who, in 1934, hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Within months the miners were producing their own work and soon became the darlings of the art scene. Though some of the most avant-garde artists became their friends and admirers and their work was highly sought-after, the men still had to work down the mines every day. A warm and witty drama, Pitmen Painters was a hit with both audiences and critics when it premiered in 2007. So successful was its initial run that it even won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play.
